In parts of Asia, rhinoceros horn is believed to cure illnesses, even though scientific research has shown that it does not. The demand for rhino horn is high. A couple of pounds of it can sell for $65,000.
Of the estimated 28,000 rhinos left in the wild, approximately 90% are in South Africa. Poachers killed at least 1,215 rhinos last year, up from 13 in 2007.
Mkhabele worries that by the time her 2-year-old son grows up, the only rhinos he sees will be on TV. Rhinos, she says, "deserve to survive."
