How is Sylvia Earle helping to protect the environment?By Jaime Joyce
April 15, 2016
On a recent Sunday morning, 28 kids from the Cabo Pulmo Youth Center stood on a beach in Cabo Pulmo, Mexico. They wore life jackets and flippers. They fitted snorkel tubes in their mouths. And they strapped on masks. Then they waddled into the cool water. Teachers were there to help. One of them was a famous oceanographer. Her name is Sylvia Earle.
Sylvia Earle is a great women! She helps the Planet by underwater expeditions, various studies of the Ocean and dissemination of information about natural problems. She spent underwater over 7000 hours. And
ReplyDeletein 1979, she set the world record for a solo deep-sea dive.

DeleteI know its CRAZZY that she spent 7000 hours under water thats 291 day is water wow
DeleteSelvia Earle just done! She saves the okenes and seas from extinction. She's a marine veterinarian, so to speak. It also cleans the water from all debris. She said: "no ocean no live, no ocean no us " She showed that she is not afraid to swim in the water with a bunch of sharks in order to save them and the ocean. She also encourages others to cleanse the ocean too. She creates excursions where she shows the ocean and what happened to it because of the people. People seeing this already without her help organize a group where they clean the ocean. She said that she began to take a great interest in the ocean since she was three years old, when she had a wave. She said that in her childhood this was not. This means that these people have been polluting the ocean for years.

Selvia Earle is a very kind and brave person! She spent underwater over 7000 hours. It protects the oceans and seas from debris and from man himself. Selvia is not afraid to swim next to sharks, risking her life just for them. At present, excessive fish are caught, corals are extinct and seemingly terrible sea creatures are destroyed.

Hi Victoria,
DeleteSylvia Earle is teaching children about being aware of the animals living in the ocean. Sylvia is teaching people that we need to treat the ocean with more respect. Every time we put trash or disrespect the ocean we are hurting the animals living in the ocean. She is trying to make sure all the animals living in the ocean are safe and healthy.

She is the kind of people that we all need in our planet and we lack those kinds of people. She makes seeing wonderful creatures of enormous oceans of our planet possible. She makes people's lives better by making one of the oldest types of creatures survive and whatever she gets paid, it's not enough. Seas are now seen as a source of money and as a battle field for submmarines with hundreds of orbital nuclear weapons on them. She is a hero!
ReplyDeleteBy Dima Balyuk fromm Kiev Ukraine
Yes I agree that we need a lot more people like her. I think it's cool that Mission Blue has 59 Hope Spots around the world. I thought it was very cool that the people of Cabo Pulmo worried and decided to help. Thanks to them the number in that area rose 500 percent. It is also cool that they persuaded the government to make the Cabo Pulmo National park.

DeleteSylvia Earl is a very brave woman. She stayed underwater for almost 7,000 hours. Protecting the ocean is the purpose of her life. She tries to protect the underwater world from the negative effects of man, because she is still surprised every time she dives underwater. Sylvia Earl must act now to save the oceans.

I also think Sylvia Earl is a brave woman. I loved the part Where she took the kids diving to see the coral and sea creatures. I think the world lacks these people and our generation could be the generation to change that. In conclusion Sylvia Earl is very brave.
DeleteI totally agree! Thats crazy that she stayed under water for almost 7,000 hours!
DeleteSylvia Earl is a true hero. Her impressive acts of kindness to our world is not only impressive, but life saving. Project blue or as Sylvia calls it “blue heart,” is an amazing group of people getting together to try and save our oceans. One reason I love this group is because I really love the ocean, and I don't want it to be full of trash when I am older. Another reason is by helping the ocean you are helping animals. I love animals so much that I want to be a vet when I am older. A quote that stood out to me was the quote "No ocean, no life, no ocean, no us." I do not live by the see but I know I can help out in many other ways.
-Heidi Volkmar Colorado
She is very brave and I totally agree with her perspective. The world is being affected by climate change and we need to stop it. I want to be like her when I grow up. She brought awareness and she's not afraid to tell people climate change is real. - Dylan Finer Colorado
DeleteSylvia Earl is very nice, caring and most importantly, not indifferent to all living things! She's like a real hero for me! She cleans the ocean, helps the inhabitants of the ocean, it seems to me, without her, the ocean would not be what it is now! She created a special community in which they help the ocean. I want to quote her phrase that impressed me: "No ocean - no life, no ocean - no us." To be honest, this phrase will probably stay with me forever. Her "Blue" team is doing and will be doing "blue" things! We, Ukrainians, do not live near the ocean or some other sea, but we can protect our lakes, rivers ... To start with a small one, for example, just don't litter, just saw the garbage to remove it, just share this information with others! I will repeat all the same one more time: Silver Earl is a real heroine! 👏

Valeriia, you are so right! she is nice, and the quote, "No ocean - no life, no ocean - no us" impressed me too!
DeleteAnd, people who live in places where oceans are not nearby(Not just in Ukraine) can protect their other water forms near them! I also don't like litter. You are so inspiring!
I think that Sylvia is very helpful to the environment, especially the oceans. I also completely agree with her opinion that not all marine animals and fish are dangerous. Let's even take the same whale sharks we saw in the video, they look big and will easily eat you if they want to, but do they really want to eat us? do they need it No, they are completely peaceful animals, and there are many like them all over the ocean. From this point of view, even the sharks themselves do not really want to eat us, they generally have enough small fish, which are plentiful in the oceans, but we humans are invading their home, so they must protect it. This is a common instinct. We also stubbornly defend our homes. They are very similar to us, so we will not be cruel.
ReplyDeleteValeriia Oleksenko, UA💕
I totally agree not all marine animals are dangerous. I also really like how she started Mission Blue. I think it is really amazing that she cares about the ocean so much. I think Mission Blue will end up very well and the ocean will be saved.
DeleteBrynn, Colorado
Hi Valeriia, I agree with you on how the sharks themselves are just being protective of their home, just like a dog might guard his territory and food. Something else that came to ming tho, was the fact that Sylvia is trying really hard to protect the ocean and to do that, she talks about it to people.

I agree with both responses and I think that it takes great compassion and curiosity to be underwater for 7,000 hours. I love her kindness towards the ocean and her want to protect it. She has already taken action and that is very cool. In conclusion, Sylvia Earle is an incredible woman who is helping the ocean in an awesome way.
Delete-Anna, Colorado
I agree that nature and oceans are beautiful. I like how you referred to nature as our house. I think that by educating kids about the ocean she is helping save the oceans from future generations to come.
DeleteCarter, Colorado
Sylvia Erale proves to us that animals are part of the living. You do not need to offend them. Some aquatic inhabitants do not harm, injure or even eat us. Therefore, we must not harm the lives of aquatic life. Do not litter in bodies of water, oceans. Do not catch fish, crabs, shrimp, and so on, do not kill. And remember that they are not at home and we are in them)🐳🐋🐬

DeleteSylvia Earle is telling us that we need to protect the ocean. Many animals have been there before. Sylvia Earle says, "it's like we're living in their backyard". The Gulf of California's Hope Spot used to be in great danger in the 1980s. After taking care of it the number of fish in the area has increased by nearly 500%.

I agree with you Nataliia. Silvia is doing a great job protecting the ocean, and she cares for the animals in it just as much as the water and plant life in the ocean. I admire that she is raising awareness especially to the newer generation in hopes that we, gen x will for full her dream of saving the ocean when she passes.
ReplyDeleteLogan Burks

Sylvia Earle is trying to show kids and adults how to take care of the ocean. She is trying to motivate kids to help change the world. She also is showing the kids what the ocean is home to so they understand how if we don't take care of our ocean, how it will affect the animals that live in the oceans. Like she said, If we don't start helping now, our ocean will be gone. This can affect us BIG time! So we must start right now! I also have a house on the Golf Of Mexico. When COVID was not here I helped pick up trash all around the beach. That is helping make a difference in the world. So, if you ever go to the beach and see trash, PICK IT UP! (Well not during COVID days.) That will help all sea life! Also, fill in our holes that you dig on the beach! Sometimes baby sea turtles get stuck in those holes and die. So we need to fill in those holes. Always do something to help change the world. One small act can lead to something BIG!

I totally agree. I also think the way Sylvia is trying to save the ocean is trying to bring awareness. If Sylvia and a group are the only ones working then the ocean is going to get worse and its just going to keep dying. So we need to work to help the ocean. Mission Blue is a great way to help and I respect that she can create such a successful organization but we need to help. The government can help we can help. Small things can make a big difference. So I totally agree with you but these are my idea about how Sylvia is helping save our oceans
Delete-Stella,Colorado
i completely agree!
DeleteI agree! Also, I think that Sylvia Earle is doing a great job by setting up Mission Blue. It's a really good way to bring awareness to the ocean's problems (that we have caused), and kids might get interested in it and start helping in their own way. I wonder how many overfished areas she has protected. Another thing, how does she not get freaked out when she's swimming by the sharks? I know I would swim out of there as fast as I could.

There are several ways that Sylvia is helping protect the environment.
ReplyDeleteThe first way is that she brings awareness. She photographs and videos these creatures, and also makes speeches about them.
The next was that Sylvia is helping protect the environment is that she's not afraid to point things out. She's not afraid to say that you're not doing your part.
The last way that she is helping our environment is that she is a pioneer. She is a woman, and she has spent so many hours, specifically more than 7,000 , underwater, researching our wonderful oceans. She has dedicated her life for the well being of us, our oceans, and animals.
As you can see, Sylvia Earle is doing many things to protect our oceans and our environment.
